LITTER PREVENTION AND CLEANUP

In 2014, South Carolina earned the ranking as the most littered state in the country.*

One of the most visible effects of litter is the negative impact on the appearance of a community environment. Littering has countless other negative consequences, including (but not limited to)**:

  • Decreased property values

  • Higher rates of littering, including illegal dumping

  • Increased property crime rates, including vandalism and damaged property

  • Stalled economic growth

  • Contribution to poor health and well-being of community members

  • Poor air, soil, and water quality

  • Worse health and biodiversity of native plants and animals

HOW DOES LITTER DISPROPORTIONATELY AFFECT THOSE IN POVERTY?

Studies show that littering occurs more often in lower-income areas.**
